How to choose a dive computer

The dive computer is one of the modern diver's most important tools, tracking essential information in real time — depth, dive time, no-decompression limits, and safe ascent rate. With so many models on the market, understanding the differences between them helps you choose one suited to how you actually dive.
The first thing to think about is the type of diving you do. For recreational diving, a basic computer — showing depth, time, and no-decompression limits — is enough for the vast majority of situations. For technical diving, involving gas mixes like nitrox or trimix, or planned decompression stops, you'll need a more advanced model that supports those functions.
