What are the scuba diving certifications?
From a try-dive to the Instructor level: understand the PADI certification ladder and where you can start climbing it.
Scuba diving certifications follow a clear progression, built to develop skill and confidence one step at a time. Understanding that ladder helps you figure out where to start and what comes next, whether you've never strapped on a tank or you're already thinking about going pro.
The most common starting point is a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience: a guided session with one-on-one instructor supervision that doesn't result in a certification, but lets you feel firsthand what breathing underwater is like before committing to a full course.
The first real certification is Open Water Diver, the internationally recognized entry-level rating. With it, you can dive anywhere in the world, alongside a certified buddy, down to 18 meters — it's the foundation every other certification builds on.
Next comes Advanced Open Water Diver, which extends your depth limit to 30 meters and consists of five adventure dives, including a mandatory deep dive and an underwater navigation dive. This is where divers start exploring different dive styles, like night diving, wreck diving, or buoyancy-focused diving.
After that is Rescue Diver, a safety- and rescue-focused certification that teaches you to spot and handle problems — your own or another diver's — before they turn into emergencies. It's often described as a turning point in how divers read the environment around them.
Alongside that main progression, there are specialty certifications — Enriched Air Nitrox, Wreck, Night, Deep, and several others — which can be taken at any point after Open Water, depending on each diver's interests.
At the professional level, the first rung is Divemaster, the first rating that lets you guide and assist certified divers. From there, anyone who wants to teach moves on to Instructor, earned through an Instructor Development Course (IDC) followed by an Instructor Examination (IE).
