One of the most common questions from people discovering diving is where to start: try a Discover Scuba Diving experience, or go straight for the PADI Open Water Diver course?

Discover Scuba Diving is an introductory experience, with no certification, designed for people who want to 'try' breathing underwater before deciding whether to go further. It's guided one-on-one by a professional, shorter in duration, and requires no prior study.

The Open Water Diver course, on the other hand, is a full course resulting in a lifelong international certification with no need for renewal. It involves knowledge development, confined-water practice, and open-water dives — and by the end, you can dive independently with a buddy anywhere in the world.

If you're not sure you'll enjoy diving, or you're on vacation with limited time, Discover Scuba Diving tends to be a great first step — and for many people, it's exactly the nudge needed to later enroll in the full course.

If you already know you want to become a certified diver, or you're planning a trip with time set aside for it, starting straight with Open Water Diver skips a step and puts you directly on the path to certification.

There's no wrong answer — the decision depends on your available time, your budget, and mostly on how certain you already are that you'll want to keep diving after that first experience.
